50 YEARS
So I went to the golden anniversary of TV horror host and pioneer Count Gore de Vol. First, I messaged my brother Jonathan to see if he was game for an event tomorrow. He says, "Yes." Now, this is why my brother is awesome. He didn't even ask what the event was about. He only knew he was going with his brother and there would (presumably) be fun. And that was enough for him.
We drove literal hours with not one question outta him. And, here's the interesting part. At the time, my brother had no idea who Count Gore de Vol was! He had never seen his show nor even knew about it.
We park, I spill the beans. He says, "Never heard of him," but still very much excited. Now, he knew about horror hosts, and I played him some Count Gore clips. Within minutes, there's a big smile, he points, he says, "I like this guy!"
My brother noticed what many do. TV horror hosts are amalgamations of everything we love about cinema, pop culture or even the decade. Jonathan didn't need years of Gore de Vol to see this. He just knew.
So we're there. Jonathan's ecstatic, full-on vibing. In mid-convo, I look to my right, and when I turn back Jonathan's seat is empty. I look and he's already halfway across the theater headed towards Count Gore.
And minutes before the event. The Count was outta time. My brother, like a lifelong fanboy, bum-rushes him for a photo.
And, still, Gore de Vol says, "Sure."
It would have been so easy for him to say no, so reasonable to decline, but that's just the kind of performer he is. The kind of person he is.
And Jonathan? He was eight again.
With that, Gore de Vol sets a new record. Turning the uninitiated to full-on fanboy within a window of two hours. Shucks, with all the merc Jonathan got, you could never tell.
That's just the effect horror hosts have.
So, thanks, Count Gore
And to everyone else, go to these events, 'cause you'll never know how you'll come out.
